A native of Greenville, Miss. and resident of Gonzales, he died Friday, July 20, 2012 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 79, a retired pipefitter and welder, and a United States Navy Korean War veteran. A gathering will be held at Ascension Funeral Home, 426 W. New River St., Gonzales, on Monday, July 23, 2012 from 10 a.m. until a Celebration of Life service at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Greenville Cemetery, Greenville, Miss., at a later date. Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Charlene Jacobs Godwin 4 daughters, Linda Doolittle, Elaine La Master, Donna Pruden and Laura Gravois 2 sons, Gary Godwin and Fred Godwin 1 sister, Sara McWhorter 16 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Prentis and Louise Godwin 2 sons, Johnny Elliott and Stephen Faulkner 2 granddaughters, Brandy Godwin and Nicolette Douglas. In his spare time, he loved to fish.
